Douala Neighbourhood Redevelopment Programme

The programme aims to redevelop the existing slum neighbourhood Sopom on the banks of the river Mboppi in Douala (Cameroon). Together with a local organisation Intervolve is working on the improvement of living conditions of the many poor households in the neigbourhood. At the moment the programme is in its second phase in which plans made in the first phase are being implemented. Our local programme manager started his work in July 2008 and he has worked on:

  • A detailed activity plan
  • Cooperation agreement with local partners
  • Official recognition for Intervolve to work as an ngo in Cameroon
  • Form a technical team and a consultative committee to think over the direction of the programme
  • Exchange of ideas with the residents of Sopom on economic development, training & education and improvement of housing
  • Form a Residents' Committee
  • Training of residents as a stimulus to start their own business in textile dying or fish/chicken drying (businesses started already)
  • Intensive lobby and cooperation with local government on recognition of land titles and a strategy for social housing
  • Improvement of one of the area's access roads and bridge
