In judging on the winner of the competition the jury paid attention to:

  • durability
  • energy efficiency
  • architectural quality
  • rapid construction
  • social acceptance of housing

Residents

Also the new residents of the house make judgement on the quality of living in it. The residents of the house built by Intervolve and Veerhuis BV are Mrs Wilhelmina Reitz (orange shirt in below picture) and her four teenage children.  Mrs Reitz and her daughter work in the local vineyards. Her son is an artist and her oldest daughter is a teacher.

The family used to live on the same spot but in a shack between other informal settlements. To be able to afford the house Mrs Reitz receives housing subsidy under te Governments Low Income Housing subsidy programme.
